Yard Act return with brand new track, ‘The Trench Coat Museum’
The Leeds quartet are playing a slew of festival dates this summer, including the Reading & Leeds main stage.
Yard Act are back, sharing their latest single ‘The Trench Coat Museum’ alongside an accompanying video. It’s the first new music from the band since their Mercury Prize-shortlisted debut album, ‘The Overload’, and comes ahead of a string of international shows.
Co-produced by Gorillaz member Remi Kabaka Jr and Yard Act themselves, the track explores concepts of ego, self-consciousness, and social visibility in the internet age. Speaking about its origins, vocalist James Smith explains how the success of their debut “left us open to scrutiny and disdain just as much as love and appreciation. Criticism is fair game and the internet is lawless so you gotta take it as it comes, but I definitely stopped searching for myself on Twitter the day I read that someone wanted to punch my lights out”.
The video, meanwhile, serves to build on the visual, character-centric universe created by the band’s debut album. It sees a visitor take an audio guided tour around a strange museum, in which the exhibits aren’t what they initially seem. Of it, director James Slater comments: “The song’s an eight-minute banger so I wanted the exhibits to come to life so that we could transition from an exhibition tour to a warehouse rave. It feels like a mini-film which is no accident, we see this as the first part of a Yard Act movie that coincides with their next album”.
