The Last Dinner Party named winners of BBC Sound Of 2024
Their much-anticipated debut album lands in less than a month.
The Last Dinner Party have won BBC Radio 1’s Sound Of 2024, only a few weeks ahead of the release of their debut album ‘Prelude To Ecstasy’ (arriving on 2nd February via Island Records). They top a longlist that also featured the likes of Olivia Dean, CMAT, and Caity Baser, and now join the ranks of former Sound Of winners including Adele, PinkPantheress, and Sam Smith.
Speaking about receiving the accolade, lead vocalist Abigail Morris has commented: “This doesn’t feel real. Has anyone got a pillow I can scream into?” Being named Sound Of 2024 is the latest milestone in The Last Dinner Party’s already meteoric rise - they’ve just won the 2024 BRITs Rising Star Award, and recently performed on Later… with Jools Holland.
The news also arrives hot on the heels of the band’s latest single: the bombastic, grandiose ‘Caesar On A TV Screen’. They’ve described the accompanying music video as “an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar”; divided into acts, it sees them each assume a character from the famous play based around the ill-fated Caesar’s downfall. The track is the band’s fifth offering, following on from their breakout hit ‘Nothing Matters’ and more recent additions ‘Sinner’, ‘My Lady Of Mercy’, and ‘On Your Side’.
Discussing the inspirations behind ‘Prelude To Ecstasy’, the five-piece have described it as “a pendulum which swings between the extremes of human emotion, from the ecstasy of passion to the sublimity of pain, and it is this concept which binds our album together.”
