Liverpool is planning a year of celebrations to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Beatles.

The band’s half century will be honoured by their home city over the course of this year, with August 19th marking 50 years since their first ever show at the legendary Cavern venue.

This will be honoured by an International Beatles Week, featuring a convention and shows, while a ‘Love Me Do’ weekend at Albert Dock will celebrate the release of their debut single on October 5th-7th.

Elsewhere The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra will perform The Two of Us: The Lennon and McCartney Songbook in June, while in December the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall will host a Beatles weekend.

Speaking to The Guardian, Michael Eakin, chief executive of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, explained: ‘We’re delighted to be playing our part in this special Beatles anniversary, paying our tribute to the four Liverpool lads whose music continues to have an extraordinary impact around the world.’
