Get To Know Get To Know… Wunderhorse
His debut single ‘Teal’ is out today.
Hello and welcome to DIY’s introducing feature, Get To Know… getting you a little bit closer to the buzziest new acts that have been catching our eye as of late, and working out what makes them tick.
Recently we’ve met Manchester trio The Early Mornings, alt-rock star Aziya, dynamic duo Wooze, South London-based multi-instrumentalist Hussy, and now we’re introducing you to Wunderhorse.
The solo project of Dead Pretties frontman Jacob Slater, today he’s sharing his debut single ‘Teal’. A mesmerising slice of shapeshifting indie-rock, and an exciting glimpse at what he’s got in store, we sent him over some qs to find out a lil’ bit more.
Describe your music to us in the form of a Tinder bio.
I don’t know much/anything about Tinder!
What’s your earliest musical memory?
I remember my dad playing me ‘Quadrophenia’ when I was very young. It’s still one of my favourite albums today.
Who were some artists that inspired you when you were just starting out (and why)?
Tom Waits perhaps. His work is brilliant because it’s so varied, one song is a polka played on a dustbin he found on the road, the next is a spoken word piece and then to finish he’ll cover something from west side story. He’d make the marketing teams at record labels shit their pants these days (surely a good sign, right?). Also he never belonged to a scene or had any interest in doing so. Smart man.
Are there any other artists breaking through at the same time that you take inspiration from?
I love Adrianne Lenker’s recent stuff. Some of her songs seem to come from a different place, like something you might hear in a dream and then forget on waking up, she manages to capture that somehow. Sorry have done some really original stuff too, I can’t think of anything else around that sounds like their record. I’m also a fan of Fontaines. They’re one of the only believable rock groups out there at the moment. They make most other rock bands sound like a con job.
Who would be your dream collaborator?
I have a friend called Harry Fowler that I’d love to work with one day. He’s been writing some really good stuff recently. Trouble is neither of us are very good at working with other people. Maybe it’s best we stay friends.
Musically or otherwise, what are you most looking forward to this year?
Being in London, I’ve missed surfing more than anything. I just want to get back home to Cornwall and get straight in the water.
If people could take away one thing from your music, what would it be?
I think I’d go crazy wondering what people think of the songs. If it hits you in the right places that’s great, if not that’s great too. It’s very boring when everyone agrees on everything, isn’t it
