Hopping across the pond to support Vampire Weekend on some November European tour slots, we meet the LA-based indie rockers.

Hello and welcome to DIY’s introducing feature, Get To Know… getting you a little bit closer to the buzziest new acts that have been catching our eye as of late, and working out what makes them tick.

Last week we brought you rock’n’rollers Vinyl Staircase, South London rapper Master Peace, London-via-Bologna trio Husky Loops, and now we’re introducing you to Wallows!

Made up of childhood pals Dylan Minnette, Braeden Lemasters and Cole Preston, the LA-based trio indie-rockers released their debut album ‘Nothing Happens’ last year, all about growing up and the loss of innocence that comes with getting older.

Now releasing their first material since then with new tracks ‘Trust Fall’ and ‘Just Like A Movie’, and with their supporting slot for some of Vampire Weekend’s European tour (including Ally Pally dates) and their own headline shows on the horizon, we caught up with the three-piece to find out more!

What’s your earliest musical memory?

My earliest musical memory is seeing my dad play shows in Ohio cause he was in bands his whole life and I was basically raised hearing him play music.

Who were some artists that inspired you when you were just starting out (and why)?

Artists that really inspired us when we were first starting out were Led Zeppelin, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix because we wanted to be a classic rock band when we were 13.

You’re based in LA - what’s the music scene like there at the moment?

The LA music scene has a lot of really great bands that belong to a tight knit community. All the bands are sort of friends one way or another. Everybody’s hanging out and doing their thing and supporting each other which is great to see. Shoutout HUNNY, Kills Birds, Btonez, and many more.

Are there other artists breaking through at the same time that you take inspiration from?

We are very inspired by a lot of artists who have broken through recently like Rex Orange County, Snail Mail, Clairo, BROCKHAMPTON, and many more. We have so much respect for them and what they are doing and are lucky to call them friends as well.

Who would be your dream collaborator?

We usually don’t say dream collaborators cause we don’t want to jinx anything or make things weird if we ever do lol, but I think Sandy Alex G, Frank Ocean, Beyoncé and Max Martin are a good place to start.

Musically or otherwise, what are you most looking forward to in 2019?

We are looking forward to October cause we love Halloween, the weather, decorating, and going to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios. Also these opening slots for Vampire Weekend in Europe. We can’t wait. Honestly though we’re looking forward to 2020, that’ll be a busy year for us.

If people could take away one thing from your music, what would it be?

If people take away anything at all from our music, we’re happy with that. The intention with the record was to evoke a feeling of nostalgia for people, but that can mean something so different to everyone.
